A Fervent and Necessary Arrangement - Midwest Nice Art

I was really excited when I saw the call for a fervent and necessary arrangement from Midwest Nice Art. This collective is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota – just a few hours from where I grew up in Brookings, South Dakota. How wonderful to see contemporary photography being promoted from my home state! I also love how inventive this call is, using a line from a Mary Oliver poem. A huge thank you to curator André Ramos-Woodard for including my video piece Murmurations. This is the first time I’ve submitted one of my video pieces to an open call, so it’s such an honor to be included. When I saw the theme, I thought instantly of this piece, since as I was shooting it, I felt the orbs were little souls being ferried to the beyond. Please click the link in my bio to see the rest of the wonderful work included in the show. Here is an excerpt from the poem:

Sometimes

Mary Oliver

Something came up
out of the dark.
It wasn’t anything I had ever seen before.
It wasn’t an animal
or a flower,
unless it was both.

Something came up out of the water,
a head the size of a cat
but muddy and without ears.
I don’t know what God is.
I don’t know what death is.

But I believe they have between them
some fervent and necessary arrangement.
