Artist Statement:
My work explores the liminal spaces where time, memory, and recognition slow down and allow for contemplative communication. In photographing what is familiar, people and spaces I know best, I seek to find more intimacy with the world I inhabit. I am drawn to sensual non-specific imagery, where light often becomes the subject, and daily observations of shifting shadows create a mood and connection with the intangible. I photograph spaces that allow for vulnerability—beds and bedrooms that reference ideas of sleep and dreaming; and I photograph nudes that allow for a pure connection to the unguarded self. As a photographer, I am not looking for what is in front of me, I am seeking to understand and communicate the unseen.
Bio:
Gina Cholick is a Los Angeles based photographer and artist. Her work is driven by light and explores themes of identity, longing and life’s journey. She combines self-portraits and landscapes to evoke a sense of mystery.
Gina’s fascination with photography began when taking a summer class as a child in South Dakota. She was instantly hooked by the magic of the darkroom. Through her camera, she discovered a new sense of adventure and connection to nature. After receiving a BA at Montana State University School of Film and Photography, she began her career working as a lighting tech and producer in Seattle before moving to Los Angeles to enjoy the sunny days and join the thriving art community. She currently works as a commercial and fine art photographer.
Her work has been exhibited widely in spaces such as the Los Angeles Center of Photography, the Robert Berman Gallery, The Center for Fine Art Photography, SE Center for Photography, Fabrik Projects Gallery, Tilt Gallery, PhotoPlace Gallery and the San Diego Art Institute. Her images have been featured in publications such as Lenscratch, F-Stop Magazine, Bokeh Bokeh Photo and the Detroit Center for Contemporary Photography. She was a finalist for Critical Mass in 2017.
